[Job Seeker] TOPIK (Test of Proficiency in Korean) (EPS-TOPIK)

◼Purpose

This is a Korean language test administered by the Ministry of Education's National Institute for International Education , and is for foreigners and overseas Koreans whose native language is not Korean. It is called TOPIK ( Test of Proficiency in Korean) and its purpose is to provide guidance on Korean language learning and to expand the use of the Korean language.

◼Evaluation method

It is divided into 6 levels , and while the Korean Language Proficiency Test is generally evaluated at levels 1 and 2 with lower numbers,
The higher the number, the more advanced it is (level 5, level 6) . Beginner (level 1-2) / Intermediate (level 3-4) / Advanced (level 5-6)

<Detailed evaluation criteria by grade>

1st class

  • You can perform basic language functions necessary for survival, such as 'introducing yourself, purchasing items, and ordering food', and you can understand and express content related to very personal and familiar topics, such as 'about yourself, your family, your hobbies, and the weather'.
  • Based on an understanding of about 800 basic vocabulary words and basic grammar, you can create simple sentences and understand and compose simple everyday and practical texts.

2nd class

  • It can perform functions necessary for daily life, such as making phone calls or making requests, as well as functions necessary for using public facilities, such as post offices and banks.
  • You can understand and use paragraphs on personal and familiar topics using about 1,500 to 2,000 words.
  • You can use language differently in formal and informal situations.

3rd grade

  • They can perform basic language functions necessary for using various public facilities and maintaining social relationships without experiencing any particular difficulties in carrying out daily life.
  • Can express or understand familiar and specific social material in paragraph units.
  • You can understand and use the basic characteristics of written and spoken language.

Grade 4

  • Able to perform language functions necessary for using public facilities and maintaining social relationships, and to perform functions necessary for performing general tasks to some extent.
  • Can understand simple content from news and newspaper articles, and can understand and use general social and abstract materials relatively accurately and fluently.
  • You can understand and use social and cultural content based on frequently used idiomatic expressions and an understanding of representative Korean culture.

Grade 5

  • Able to perform to a certain extent the language functions necessary for research or work in a specialized field.
  • You can understand and use unfamiliar materials across politics, economics, society, and culture.
  • Ability to use language appropriately according to formal and informal contexts and spoken and written contexts.

Grade 6

  • Able to perform language functions necessary for research or work in a specialized field with relative accuracy and fluency.
  • You can understand and use unfamiliar topics in politics, economics, society, and culture. Although you may not be able to reach the level of a native speaker, you will not have difficulty performing functions or expressing meaning.


◼ Usage Information

① Government-invited foreign scholarship students’ advancement and academic management

② Admission to domestic universities and graduate schools for foreigners and overseas Koreans who have completed foreign education courses

③ Acquisition of employment visas and selection of applicants for employment at Korean companies, personnel standards

④ Recognition of domestic licenses of foreign medical practitioners

⑤ Obtaining qualifications to take the Korean language teacher qualification exam (level 2-3) for foreigners

⑥ Acquisition of permanent residency

⑦ Application for marriage immigration visa issuance

◼Purpose

This is a Korean language test administered by the Korea Human Resources Development Institute for Industry , and is called the Employment Permit System-Test of Proficiency in Korean (EPS-TOPIK).

This test is designed to evaluate the Korean language proficiency and level of understanding of Korean society of foreign job seekers and to serve as an objective selection criterion when creating a list of foreign job seekers, and to encourage the entry of those with a basic understanding of Korea, thereby improving their adaptability to life in Korea.

EPS ( Employment Permit System) is an abbreviation for Employment Permit System, a system established to legally hire foreign workers, and is not as difficult as other Korean language proficiency tests.


◼Eligibility

-Foreigners and overseas Koreans, applicants (Koreans can also apply)

- 18 years old or older and 39 years old or younger

- No criminal record higher than a safe deposit box

- No history of forced deportation or departure from the Republic of Korea in the past

-There will be no restrictions (disqualification reasons) on departure from the country.

Evaluation method: Relative evaluation

  • Those who scored 80 points or more out of 200. Successful applicants will be determined in order of scores based on the number of people selected (or scheduled to be selected).
